The last few years I have been studying neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s a lot and one of my most surprised findings is that your fasting insulin levels are actually more closely correlated with your risk of Alzheimer’s disease than your age!
Think about that for a second. For decades we have looked at brain degeneration diseases like Alzheimer’s as being genetic and something that just happens as we get older. That’s not to say that genetics and age aren’t a factor, but the research is clear, for most people, your risk of alzheimer’s is more closely linked to your fasting insulin levels.
Personally, I think this is great news. You can’t do much about your genetics or age but you can do something about your fasting insulin levels and keto is one of those things you can do.
The ketogenic diet is incredible for brain health because it not only improves your insulin sensitivity and metabolic health, which play a key role in overall brain health and Alzheimer’s prevention, but also increases energy to the brain and reduces brain inflammation, which are also key factors in reducing Alzheimer’s risk.
Keto isnt just for avoiding Alzheimer’s though, ketones appear to even be beneficial for individuals already suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and the research tells us that this is in part due to the fact that the Alzheimer’s brain, which struggles to get enough energy from glucose due to insulin resistance, can get all the energy it needs from ketones.
