Over the years, the keto diet has experienced a roller coaster ride in popularity. Originally founded in 1920 for epilepsy, the keto diet has actually been in textbooks for over 100 years. That is until the development of anto-epileptic drugs which led to the keto diet being largly forgotten about. Throughout the 2010s we saw a rebirth in keto dieting in both research and the mainstream media. By 2016-2018, keto was the hottest diet for weight loss.
By 2020, everyone was saying keto was a fad diet and some news outlets were even ranking it as the worst diet of the year (Check year). Over the last couple of years, we have seen keto dieting become more popular as a strategy for treating chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and improving overall metabolic health. Fast forward to today and keto is making major headlines with new research highlighting some promise for a new therapeutic potential for this 100+ year old diet
